Het eerste filmpje komt uit de documentaire Triumph of the Nerds uit 1996, en die op PBS is uitgezonden. Presentator was Robert Cringely, die nu nog steeds een column schrijft over het reilen en zeilen in Silicon Valley. Het fragment gaat over de grafische interface gebaseerd op vensters en besturing via een muis, die we nu allemaal kennen, maar die oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld werd door het Palo Alto Research Centre van Xerox, ook bekend als Xerox Parc. Steve Jobs, toenmalig CEO van Apple, wordt terecht opgevoerd als de visionair die de grafische interface naar de persoonlijke computer bracht. Een korte transcript, die Robert Cringely met zeer veel overgave brengt:
The most dangerous man in Silicon Valley sits in an office in this building. People love him and hate him. Often at the same time. For ten years by sheer force of will he made the personal computer industry follow his direction. With this guy we're not talking about someone driven by the profit motive in a desire for an opulent retirement at the age of forty, no we're talking holy war we're talking rivers of blood and fields of dead martyrs to the cause of greater computing. We're talking about a guy who sees the personal computer as his tool for changing the world. We're talking about Steve Jobs.Een tweede filmpje gaat ook over Steve Jobs. Het is een speech die hij gaf tijdens de graduation op Stanford in 2005. Aan Amerikaanse universiteiten is het wel vaker de gewoonte dat op diploma-uitreikingen bekende sprekers worden uitgenodigd, en Stanford is natuurlijk geen uitzondering.
Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Donald Greenberg, in wiens Program of Computer Graphics aan Cornell University ik werkte als postdoc van 1998 tot 2001. Don Greenberg is een legende op zichzelf in het computer graphics-wereldje. Een zeer inspirerend iemand, van hem heb ik zeer veel opgestoken over hoe je een succesvolle research groep moet leiden. Het filmpje schetst zijn carriere, startende van toen hij zelf ook student was aan Cornell in de jaren 50, en toen studeren nog een sociaal voorrecht was. All-American and definitely Ivy-League ...
